Jagannath Puri is a holy temple for Hindus, and it’s one of the “Dham” out of Char Dham (four divine sites) comprising Rameswaram, Badrinath, Puri, and Dwarka. Temples at these sites are Ramanathaswamy Temple, Badrinath Temple, Jagannath Temple, and Dwarka Dheesh Temple. As per the mythology, Hindus are supposed to visit all the char dham at least once in their lifetime. These religious sites are to be completed in a clockwise direction starting from Jagannath Temple.
Puri is a rambling seaside town on the eastern coast of Orissa overlooking the Bay of Bengal. Puri attracts visitors and lulls them into a soporific trance, a state of mind popularly known as “Puri Paralysis”. It is the home of the Lord of the World, Lord Jagannath, whose awesome chariot procession through the streets gave English language, the word "juggernaut", the unstoppable force.
During the ‘Rath Yatra’ or chariot procession the gods who reside in the Jagannath Temple are ceremoniously transported to a garden retreat and the town is flooded by vast multitudes of people who travel to Puri seeking salvation. Itinerary for Bhubaneswar with Puri Package
Day 1: Bhubaneswar Arrival- Khandagiri & Udayagiri Caves
On your arrival at the Bhubaneswar Airport/Railway Station, you will be met by our local representative / cab driver at Bhibaneswar and taken to the hotel. Freshen up and relax for a while, because you have a half day tour awaiting you. Today, you will be visiting attractions such as the Khandagiri & Udayagiri Caves, situated 8 km from Bhubaneswar are abundant with caves. Thirty-three rock caves were cut into the hill around 2nd century B.C. The caves have names like Hathi Gumpha (Elephant Caves), Parrot Caves and Ananta Gumpha (Snake Caves). The two-storied Rani Gumpha or Queen's caves are especially important for their art and architecture. The largest caves have ornate carvings, painstakingly and delicately done, displaying the high standards of artistic achievements in eastern India. Every year, this place plays host to a sadhus (holy men) convention in late January. Hundreds of travelling holy men, magnificent in their saffron robes and dreadlocks gather on the hillside to intone verses from the Gita.

Day 2 : Bhubaneswar City Tour ( Lingaraj Temple, Mukteswar Temple, Rajrani Temple, Nandan Kanan)
After a delicious breakfast, you will begin your sightseeing tour of the temple city of Bhubaneswar with a visit to the Lingaraj Temple, situated south of the Bindu Sagar Lake. Bindu Sagar means a drop of ocean. Bathing in the Bindu Sagar Lake is considered holy because it is said to contain the waters of all the sacred rivers, streams and pools of India. Dating back over 1400 years, the temple is dedicated to Tri Bhubaneswar, the Lord of the Three Worlds. The temple is closed to the non-Hindus but they can visit the outer compound and see the magnificent architecture and sculptures. The deity of the Lingaraj temple is brought here for his annual dip during the chariot festival of Ashokastami, celebrated in April.
Later you will visit the gem of Orissa’ temple architecture the Mukteswara Temple, the most ornate of the temples in Bhubaneswar. The Siddeshwara Temple is an incomplete affair that has the resident deities of Ganesha and Kartikeya, the two sons of Shiva. Nearby is Marichi Kund, a small tank whose waters are said to have power to cure infertility.
After seeking blessings you will be taken to Rajrani Mandir which is surrounded by well-maintained grounds. The Guardians of the Eight Directions, called Dikpalas are the deities who protect the main shrine. The Dikpalas or prominent guardians are Yama, the god of Death, with his club and noose; Nritti, the God of Misery holding a severed head; Varuna, the serene God of Light standing on his sea monster; Kubera, God of Prosperity with a jar full of gem stones; Ishana, a form of Shiva and next to him Indra, the Storm God armed with his thunderbolt.
In the afternoon you will be visiting Nandankanan, one of the best zoo in India. Located 25 km north of Bhubaneswar,it is charmingly carved out of the Chandaka Forest; and is a park where animals live in their natural habitat. This zoo is home to the rare white Bengal Tigers. The zoo population includes lions, clouded leopards, black panthers, European brown bears, Himalayan black bears, gharials (crocodiles), pelicans, Indian pythons, and king cobras along with the famous White Tiger.

Day 3 : Bhubaneswar - Puri ( Dhauligiri Shanti Stupa, Jagannath Temple, Gundicha)
Today, check out of your hotel in Bhubaneswar after a hearty breakfast, and leave for the Temple town of Puri. Enjoy the scenic route, and enjoy visiting some temple en-route including the Dhauligiri Shanti Stupa, standing out from amidst the surrounding paddy fields. Dhauligiri is one of the Emperor Ashoka’s 3rd century’s Rock Edicts disseminating Lord Buddha’s teachings. It has a magnificent elephant carved on the top, said to be the earliest rock cut sculpture in India. The edict and area around it evokes images of the historic 'Kalinga War' that was fought here.
On arrival at the hotel in Puri, check in and relax for a while, freshen up and leave for a day spent visiting the many beautiful temples of the city. Seek the lord’s blessings at The Jagannath Temple, dedicated to Lord Krishna. It is one of the four dhams or holy places venerated by Hindus and mandatory pilgrimage for the devout. This temple complex was built during the 12th century A.D. by Anantavarman Chodaganga as a place to offer prayers to the God Vishnu. The main features of the temples are its sculpted figures from Hindu mythology and its tapering 65m high spire. The Jagmohan, the inner sanctum has images of the black hued Jagannath (an incarnation of Vishnu, the god Krishna), his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra. It is said that the prasad or the sanctified food served at the temple is the tastiest morsel cooked in Puri. The temple is strictly off limits for non-Hindus. The area surrounding the temple complex is fairly interesting with the Raghunandan Library, directly opposite the main gate of the Jagannath Temple. This library houses a dusty and neglected collection of rare palm leaf manuscripts and religious texts. Towards the south lies one of the most auspicious cremation grounds for Hindus, the Swargadwar or the gateway to heaven. Later visit Gundicha temple, after that head to the beach - relax, lie in the shade of the swaying palms or try your hand at some water sports. Go fishing with some of the fishermen in their boat or take a holy dip in the sea. Surfing is another popular activity in Puri that you can enjoy. Return to the hotel for a relaxing overnight stay.
Day 4: Puri - Chilka Lake - Puri
After breakfast, you will leave for a tour of the beautiful Chilika Lake. The Chilka Lake in Orissa is Asia’s largest inland salt-water lagoon studded with small islands, separated from the Bay of Bengal by a sandy ridge. Spread across 1100 sq km, it has a unique ecosystem with a large number of aquatic flora and fauna found in and around its brackish waters one of the rarest being the Irrawady dolphins. White bellied sea eagles, grey-legged geese, purple moorhen; jacana, herons and flamingos make it a bird watcher’s delight. The islands are not great for bird watching but offer an exceptional romantic view of the sunrise and sunset. You can hire a motorboat at Chilka Lake from a Govt. approved agency for 1 hour, 3 hours on direct payment basis). The Sun Temple at Konark qualifies as one of the most impressive man-made monuments anywhere in the world. An awe-inspiring and wondrous structure of stone, the Sun Temple of Konark is dedicated to the Sun God, Surya. Built by Raja Narasimhadeva of the powerful Ganga dynasty in the 13th century, it is an imposing stone edifice representative of the Chariot of the Sun God, drawn through the heavens by seven celestial horses. The horses strain at the reins as they pull the magnificent chariot on twelve pairs of gigantic wheels symbolising the sun’s cycle and the passing of time. Even today despite it being in a state of ruin, the temple is a breathtaking sight. It is said that the construction of this creative monument took 12 years of the kingdom’s revenue. Renowned for its unique architectural design and intricate sculpture, the Sun Temple is a UNESCO world heritage site.
On the way to this famous temple, visit the Ramachandi Temple, located on the banks of the Kusabhadra River. Spend some time relaxing on the beautiful Chandrabhaga Beach and the famous Pipli Applique Village, which has been established for giving the local artists and craftsmen a platform.
